her always so eager features will fall, replaced by a look of complete loss. she doubts not that he’s capable of such a terrible act. the rage is still tangible in the air about him, it’s even something she can still taste, but what truly breaks the countess is that look upon donovan’s face; he doesn’t care. not one ounce of regret is in place, and it makes her question everything. there’s no need to check on her beloved, not now at least, for the arrogance and surely way donovan holds himself tells her all that’s necessary.

“ — are you proud of yourself, donovan? are you proud of what you’ve done? “

already, elizabeth’s voice wavers, almost breaking as the last word is spoken, but she cuts herself off just in time. emerald oculars will remain on him, but the countess is split between experiencing loss and rage; she knows not where she falls in that moment, not in the presence of her lover, the one she recreated in the image of her long, lost love.

❝ It HAD to be done. ❞

He answered dryly and with a small shrug of the shoulders, as if treating this entire
situation as if it was some kind of small job. A simple act of obligation like waking up
and having breakfast every morning. The murderer that he had just committed didn’t
even feel like it was that. Not to say that it was solely because it left him without any
remorse because Donovan was no stranger to murder. He has done it before on
numerous occasions without feeling a shred of sympathy afterwards, so this was
really no different. As far as he was concerned, this wasn’t even considered a murder,
not really — it was but a requirement; cropping an unwanted portion out of a much
larger picture. He wanted Elizabeth for himself and would go on to do anything
humanely possible to assure himself that she was exactly what he had in the long run.
But for now, he couldn’t help but feel a rather strong uncertainty overwhelm him.

He didn’t exactly know how, or even want to really ask, but he couldn’t help but
question where this entire situation left him. But more importantly, where exactly did
it leave them? Standing back, he chose to simply stay quiet and attempt to read her
body language. Hopefully that would do enough in answering whatever question he had.
